During the past 30 years, I worked as a research geologist and consultant specializing in exploration of diamonds, colored gemstones, precious metals, base metals & strategic metals as well as Cratonic environments and Archean greenstone terrains. My work led to the discovery of some diamondiferous kimberlites, numerous gold anomalies & deposits, some nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum & palladium occurrences, several gemstone deposits & other mineral occurrences. Several hundred discoveries of mineral occurrences, deposits, and previously unreported minerals were made simply because I looked at things a little differently than most everyone else. In some cases, it is puzzling how some deposits had been overlooked, including the Cedar Ridge opal deposit that had numerous oil field roads cut through the deposit including a pipeline that exposed tons of common and precious opal and Sweetwater agates. This deposit had even been described in some early USGS literature in the 1930s.
W. Dan Hausel (right, green jacket) dicusses controls of gold mineralization in the South Pass Archean greenstone
belt (Hausel, 1991). I ended up mapping this 450 square mile greenstone belt over a period of 5 years along with >
a dozen gold mines. The work resulted in the discovery of dozens of significant gold anomalies.
Author of >500 papers, books and maps, public speaker of >400 lectures on mineral resources & keynote speaker & invited speaker to several Mineral Resource conferences. I also mapped >700 mi2 of complex geological terrain in Wyoming’s mining districts and Archean greenstone belts and produced maps for most of Wyoming's districts and historic (accessible) mines. This latter project led to the discovery of the Rattlesnake Hills gold district in 1981 as well as many other mineral deposits. I have been noted as the most productive geologist in the history of this agency.
As a consultant for Western Gold Exploration and Mining in Alaska, I provided the initial detailed mapping on the Donlin Creek gold deposit, which is recognized as one of the largest (>23.5 million ounces) undeveloped gold deposit in North America. While employed by Western Archon, I discovered sapphire and benitoite during exploration of an unconventional diamond deposit in California. As a consultant for Echo Bay & Bald Mountain Mining, I recommended and examined several diamond projects around the US. As a consultant for DiamonEx Ltd, I placed them into a major land position in the USA with the acqusition of the Sloan Ranch kimberlite deposits and nearly 200 additional high-quality diamond targets. Additionally, I discovered 8 different fields of anomalies that have several characteristics of kimberlite - Seven of these fields were acquired by DiamonEx based on my discoveries and recommendations.
In 1992, I was the recipient of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist's President's Certificate for Excellence and was awarded the Wyoming Geological Association's Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Endeavors and Contributions. In 2001, I was awarded the Education Award by the National Rock Hound & Lapidary Hall of Fame (HOF) and was one of 7 people inducted into that HOF. In 2004, the Wyoming Geological Association awarded me their highest honor – the association’s ‘Distinguished Service Award’ for outstanding endeavors and contributions to the work and progress of the association and understanding of Wyoming’s geology. I am also a member of several WHO's WHO biographical reference works.
